SOHO GRAND'S RESIDENT DJS DISH OUT ON LATE NIGHT EATS

Back to List

It’s Friday night at 3am: the bewitching hour at which point clubs start closing, friends start Irish-exiting, and those late night cravings set in hard.

But in the city that never sleeps, where does one find the perfect meal after a long night out? Surely everyone has their favorite 24-hour bodega, but we’re New Yorkers. We pride ourselves on fine dining, even in the wee hours of the night. With the coveted job of getting the party started (and thus becoming night-owls), who better to ask than some of New York City’s favorite DJs.

We caught up with three of Soho Grand’s resident DJs, Alix Brown, Spiky Phil and Mike Nouveau, to chat about how they unwind after a long night out – and most importantly, what they eat.

Alix Brown, @alix_brown

It’s 2am (or maybe 4am), and you’re just leaving a party that you DJ’d. Where are you going to eat?

My friend Sean Lennon introduced me to Blue Ribbon Brasserie years ago, and it’s my favorite place to go to late night.

What do you usually order?

Oysters, New Orleans shrimp, bone marrow, pu pu platter, duck soup, fried chicken, blackened catfish… It’s all good, really! You can’t go wrong.

What keeps you coming back?

The food is consistently good. There’s always an interesting crowd, they play great music, and the waiters are super nice and accommodating.

On the way home, what song are you playing in the taxi?

For Belgian Friends by The Durutti Column.

Phil Meynell, @spikyphil

It’s 2am (or maybe 4am), and you’re just leaving a party that you DJ’d. Where are you going to eat?

When the DJing ends, it’s more important to get in that last bar hop spot of the night. Usually I wind up texting everyone that works in nightlife, until someone says, “Yeah, come by for one more!” Next thing you know, you end up in a cab for half an hour with a crew of people you just met, having that last drink in an empty bar with a guy mopping the floor! If you absolutely must have another, then you head to Cafeteria where you can order a burger and fries from a transvestite and have a beer on the side.

What do you usually order?

The greasiest thing on the menu (usually something I wouldn’t order sober). It’s what I like to call the feeling-guilty-in-the-morning special.

What keeps you coming back?

The trannys and late night beers.

On the way home, what song are you playing in the taxi?

If it’s an Uber I will take his cord and will usually blast some rock n roll to the skyline scene bolting passed my windows. If it’s a yellow cab, with one hand over my eye, I will look at all the crap Instagram stories I have taken during the night and start deleting accordingly.

Mike Nouveau, @mikenoveau

It’s 2am (or maybe 4am), and you’re just leaving a party that you DJ’d. Where are you going to eat?

I’ll usually end up at Veselka. It’s an East Village staple for sure. I’ve been going there forever.

What do you usually order?

Depends on my mood, but usually chicken noodle soup and pierogi. Sometimes a burger.

What keeps you coming back?

It’s open 24 hours and just such a classic spot. It’s basically packed with people at all times.

How do you unwind when you get home from a night of partying?

I crawl into bed with the warm glow of the internet on my lap.
